A new memorandum from NIH office director Matthew Memoli, obtained from Forbes, explains what it can and cannot be done regarding clinical evidence, purchase, research and public appearances.
W.TRUE TRUMP TRUE President Last week he ordered a “pause” for health care communications, the National Institute of Health descended into chaos, with researchers inside and outside the unclear government agency for what was allowed. Now, a Monday Memorandum by NIH’s director has provided clarity between uncertainty: NIH, Jewel Crown of American Scientific Research, will continue to perform its primary functions, including clinical evidence and medical research to save life.
In the two -page document, the director of Nih Matthew Memoli reiterated that the Department of Health and Human Services has “issued a pause” for public communications and appearances by the agency staff. But the memorandums say that clinical evidence in NIH and its funded institutions are ongoing, laboratories can buy “necessary supplies” for research preaching Trump inauguration and meetings on before this date can also continue.
Memo is unclear about what will happen to the waiting grants. New grant reviews, including difficulty studying sections, had previously stopped. The document only says that “additional instruction” will be provided later this week.
Memo was first reported by Stat. NiH did not respond to a comment request.
Following the cancellations of NIH meetings for grant meetings and assessments last week, researchers concerned their ability to continue making scientific advances. And as forbes reported last week, scientists feared that essential medical research would be stuck. While Memol’s mission has tempted those feelings little, Nih employees remain frustrated and anxious.
“I think the purpose of such a chaotic freezing of communication was to scare us, demoralize us, and return science a little in an effort to make us look bad,” a NIH employee who has been in the agency for several years said stale. “We are not perfect at all, but, FFS, our work is literally to enable research to save lives, what the hell?”
“There has never been politics in Nih,” said another source within Nih, adding, “when politics is suddenly being included, this is where fear comes to a large part.”
Temporary freezing in meetings is especially important for cancer research, where the National Cancer Institute has a budget of $ 7 billion of total NIH $ 47 billion. More broadly, NIH serves as a financial kickstarter for research and a validity of essential scientific studies. Every slowdown can reduce progress, according to Kazi helal, a PitchBook analyst, especially for biotechnics beginnings.
“The latest NIH grant suspension is likely to lead [a] Falling university spinouts within months, “he by email staleadding that uncertainty can make entrepreneurship capitalists hesitate to “fill [the] Financing gap. “
A stop for purchasing supplies, first reported by CNN and confirmed by Forbes, He raised concerns about what would happen with clinical trials at the NIH hospital on the campus, the clinical test center, whether the test tubes or reagents were finished.
Memol’s memo clarified that continuous clinical evidence can continue and patients can travel for evidence, but that “no procurement or contractions should be done for new studies, new equipment or research services unrelated to studies that were started Prior to January 20, 2025. “He added that” meetings or communication regarding research that were already continuing before January 20, 2025 may continue if it does not include public information, “may also progress.
NIH researchers may continue to present their letters and abstracts for studies that began before Trump’s inauguration, but cannot do that research widely available before the peer review, according to the memorandum.
